Health roles in volcanic crises: A case example from the 2018 Kilauea eruption
Volcanic eruptions can impact the health and wellbeing of nearby populations, many of which reside in densely populated major cities. During a crisis, a coordinated, multi-disciplinary response is necessary to mitigate health risks and provide timely advice to these anxious communities. A successful health-facing response requires volcanologists, the health sector and emergency management agencies to co-develop an eruption response plan so that roles and protocols are well defined prior to the onset of an eruption. The unprecedented 2018 eruption of Kilauea volcano, USA, tested our existing response capacity, resulting in numerous successes and lessons learned.
