L’équipe de volcanologie dispose d’outils de simulation numérique, dont certains ont été développés au laboratoire : code VolcFlow pour la modélisation d’écoulements volcaniques, modèles de déformation  et transferts de magmas par éléments frontières et domaines fictifs (DefVolc). Cette activité s’appuie en partie sur les moyens de calculs du mesocentre de l’UCA et de la plateforme de télédétection.

  • Modélisation des coulées de lave

    PyFLOWGO

    L’avancé d’une coulée de lave peut être modélisée en suivant l’évolution des propriétés thermo-rhéologiques de la roche en fusion. Ces propriétés rhéologiques, définies par la viscosité et la limite d’élasticité, évoluent avec le refroidissement et la cristallisation lors de la mise en place d’une coulée. Le modèle FLOWGO, conçu par Harris et Rowland (2001) permet de calculer la perte de chaleur d’un volume de lave s’écoulant dans un canal et d’en déduire ces propriétés rhéologiques et la vitesse d’épanchement pour un débit donné. PyFLOWGO est une version mise à jour de FLOWGO écrite en Python 3, qui est open-source et compatible avec n’importe quel système d’exploitation. Ce code numérique offre un choix varié de modèle pour calculer la viscosité de la lave en fonction de la fraction et de la forme des cristaux et des bulles.

    PyFLOWGO en association avec DOWNFLOW (Favalli et al. 2005) permet de modélisé la longueur d’une coulée de lave pour un débit donnée et en prenant en compte les caractéristiques pétrologiques de la lave. Cette méthode est utilisée pour estimer rapidement la distance qu’une coulée peux atteindre lors de crise effusive.

    Simulation de l’interaction lave / rivière. Volcan Tseax, Canada (BC).
    En refoidissant la coulée, la rivière impose les directions d’écoulement de la lave. La simulation reproduit les épaisseurs et l’extension de la coulée de la fin du 17ème siècle ainsi que les durées décrites dans les traditions orales autochtones.

  • Modélisation inverses de déformations de volcans

    Afin de suivre les transferts de magma et de déterminer leur influence sur la stabilité des édifices volcaniques, nous analysons les déformations de volcans, mesurées par Interférométrie radar (OI2), en combinant des simulations par éléments frontières mixtes, MBEM, (Cayol et Cornet, 1998) ou domaine fictifs (Bodart et al., 2015) avec des inversions (Fukushima et al., 2015). Les modèles éléments frontières sont tri-dimensionnels et supposent le milieu rocheux élastique et homogène. Ces modèles prennent en compte la topographie, et toutes sortes de sources, qu’elles soient de type réservoir ou fractures (failles ou intrusions de magma). Pour la prise en compte de fractures situées milieu hétérogène, nous développons actuellement une méthode d’éléments finis basée sur une approche par domaines fictifs, en collaboration avec F. Dabaghi (post-doc CNES 2019-) et O. Bodart de l’institut Camille Jourdan, J. Koko du LIMOS.

    Modélisation numérique avec le logiciel COMSOL

    L’interférométrie radar (InSAR) révèle un nombre croissant d’édifices et de complexes volcaniques présentant des déplacements de surface importants, maintenus sur de nombreuses années, et qui suggèrent un stockage de magma en profondeur. L’interprétation de ces déplacements reste néanmoins complexe, et on ne sait toujours pas distinguer les déplacements qui peuvent précéder une éruption de ceux qui ne traduisent qu’une accumulation bénigne de magma. L’une des énigmes à résoudre concerne la façon dont le magma s’accumule dans une région de la croûte et comment cette accumulation magmatique affecte la rhéologie de la croûte et la déforme au cours du temps. Cette question est au cœur du projet ClerVolc « Probing the mechanics governing the growth, evolution and eruption of large silicic magma bodies » qui a débuté au printemps 2016 avec le postdoctorat de Nicolas Le Corvec. À l’aide de COMSOL Multiphysics et du module Structural Mechanics, l’équipe met au point un protocole numérique permettant le contrôle de COMSOL via Matlab utilisant le module Matlab Livelink pour simuler la croissance d’un corps magmatique par accrétion intermittente de sills. Le module Heat Transfert sera ensuite incorporé pour modéliser l’évolution rhéologique des roches autour des sills et déterminer les déformations engendrées en surface au cours du temps ainsi que le point de rupture du système, c.-à-d. si et quand une éruption peut avoir lieu.

    Une autre difficulté dans l’interprétation des mesures InSAR est l’accumulation rapide de laves sur les flancs des édifices volcaniques. C’est le cas au Piton de la Fournaise à la Réunion. Les mesures InSAR montrent un déplacement important du flanc Est depuis 2007 et donc le potentiel pour un effondrement de flanc catastrophique, comme cela est déjà arrivé plusieurs fois au cours de son histoire. Cependant, la mise en place répétée de laves sur ce flanc depuis plus de 20 ans et leur compaction suite à leur refroidissement contribuent de manière significative aux déplacements mesurés par InSAR, et il est difficile pour le moment de faire la part des différents phénomènes et de caractériser précisément un éventuel glissement global du flanc Est. Alexis Hrysiewicz a précisément quantifié les étendues et volumes des coulés de laves émises depuis le début des années 1980.
