  • Research :

    I work principally on explosive volcanism and its products. I am interested in the deep ascent of magma through the crust, the assembly of shallow magma chambers, the triggering of eruptions, and the timescales on which these processes take place. This work exploits petrological techniques including melt inclusion volatile content and intracrystalline diffusion chronometry. I have also worked on the dynamics of pyroclastic flow emplacement and on the formation of calderas, via a combination of field and experimental techniques. My main field areas have included Santorini caldera (Greece), Soufrière Hills Volcano (Montserrat, Antilles) and Crater Lake (Oregon).

  • Scientific and administrative responsibilities :

    1. Principal Investigator and Co-chief scientist on International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 398 ‘Hellenic Volcanic Arc’ on the Joides Resolution to drill at Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo marine volcanic field (Greece) in December 2022 and January 2023.
    2.  Scientific Director of the Laboratory of Excellence transdisciplinary consortium ‘ClerVolc‘ (2011-). This project is funded at 13 million euros over fifteen years, and involves six laboratories of Clermont-Auvergne University.
    3. Chair of the Research Networking Programme ‘MeMoVolc’ of the European Science Foundation (2011-2016). ‘MeMoVolc’ stands for Measuring and modelling Volcano Eruption Dynamics. The network was funded at 0.5 million euros over five years by eight European countries.
