TIMS Triton

TIMS Triton (Thermo-Ionisation Mass Spectrometer), from ThermoFisher Scientific, has been installed in the Laboratory Magmas and Volcans since January 2005. This instrument was co-financed by INSU, the University Blaise Pascal from the Auvergne Region and Regional FEDER funds. This instrument is a spectrometer for isotope analysis. It is equipped with 9 Faraday cages allowing the

Chemistry room: alkaline fusion

Mise en solution par fusion alcaline The technique uses fluxing agents : Mixing: fluxing agent/sample, lowers the melting point of the sample. The main fluxing agents contain borates: LiBO2 / sample powder. Melting is generally done in graphite crucibles using a magnetic induction furnace. The obtained bead is dissolved in an acidified solution (HNO3 1%).

The white chemical room

The clean room is dedicated to wet analysis of samples (sample dissolution and separation of chemical elements). It is a dust-free (pressurized under filtered air) and ventilated area (extraction of acid vapors). It consists mainly of materials/furniture that are inert to acids. The room is divided into several smaller areas dedicated to specific applications.

MC-ICPMS Neptune

Instrumentation ThermoFisher Scientific’s MC-ICPMS Neptune Plus (Multiple Collector – Inductively Coupled Plasma -Mass Spectrometry) was funded by the Clervolc Laboratory of Excellence and FEDER funds. It was installed in the laboratory in June 2013. The mass spectrometer includes a high flow rate pumping at the interface (« Jet interface »), a dual focus (electric sector and
